Breakthroughs Are Possible with Behavioral Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Early diagnosis and behavioral interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can lead to significant, positive lifelong outcomes. Research indicates that interventions initiated before age 4 can enhance cognition, language, daily living, and social skills. At Wee Speak Therapy & Learning Center, we offer occupational and speech therapy services for children who behave, communicate, and learn in different ways than others. In this blog post, we’ll explore some common themes associated with ASD and the techniques and therapies we use to unlock behavioral breakthroughs.

Help your child enhance their unique strengths and gifts with proven therapies.

Behavioral Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Studies show that children benefit from behavioral interventions for autism spectrum disorder when they are started as early as possible. In some cases, ASD can be detected before 18 months of age. However, many children aren’t diagnosed with the disorder until the signs are more noticeable, like when they have missed major developmental milestones.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition characterized by challenges with social interaction and communication and by the presence of repetitive behaviors and restricted interests.

ASD presents differently in everyone, so our therapists use a variety of evidence-based techniques and tools to convey concepts and improve skills.

Sensory Processing

For some children with ASD, the world can seem too loud, too bright, and even too rough for them. From the outside, it can look like the child is in constant motion, frequently frustrated, and has out-of-control emotions. We introduce a tailored set of activities and tools designed to help children regulate their sensory activities.

  • Weighted vests or blankets to help calm the body
  • Looking and speaking through opposite sides of a tunnel to limit outside distractions when communicating
  • Listening to calming music

Communication

Children with ASD often face a range of speech and communication challenges, like:

  • Delayed speech development
  • Difficulty understanding and using non-verbal queues
  • Challenges in maintaining conversations
  • Repetitive speech
  • Absence of spoken language entirely

We use various tools and techniques to enhance expressive and receptive language skills, like Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) and electronic voice-to-text systems.

Fine Motor Skills

Tasks like holding a pencil, cutting with scissors, and buttoning a shirt can be challenging for children with ASD. Our occupational therapists can help them grow and strengthen the muscles in hands and fingers, and improve cognitive function to help them perform tasks requiring small movements.

  • Playing with dough to practice squeezing, rolling, and pinching
  • Lacing macaroni onto string or pipe cleaners
  • Using chopsticks to pick up small pieces of food like popcorn or chips

Gross Motor Skills

Skills that involve balance, like running, walking, and even throwing and catching a ball, can be difficult for children with ASD. We use a variety of games and activities to help children develop these skills and have fun doing it.

  • Climbing equipment
  • Trampolines
  • Throwing and catching balls of all different sizes

Social Skills

The nuances of social interactions can be particularly difficult for children with ASD. These behavioral interventions initially begin with scripts and later transition into more spontaneous interactions. We use role-playing games and social stories to teach them how to:

  • Interpret facial expressions
  • Understand personal space
  • Engage in conversation
