When was the last time you really thought about how frequently you use your hands? Every morning, you brush your teeth, style your hair, and button up your shirt–all before breakfast! For that reason, recognizing the importance of fine motor skill development in children is a given.
Fine motor skills are those skills that require small, delicate movements in your hands and fingers. They’re essential in helping kids write, use scissors, eat with utensils, and much more.
The pediatric therapists at Wee Speak Therapy & Learning Center routinely help kids struggling with fine motor delays. We’ll work with you to get to the root cause of the delay and then develop a customized treatment plan to improve the strength and dexterity in your child’s hands.
As with all developmental issues, the sooner you seek treatment, the more likely you’ll see a successful outcome. Get started at our Lafayette clinic today!
Understanding Fine Motor Skill Development In Children
As children grow, they learn to interact with the world around them. This includes developing the physical, emotional, and cognitive skills they’ll need to thrive in day-to-day life.
While every child develops at their own pace, it’s still important that you watch out for key developmental milestones. Missing a milestone could indicate your child has an underlying condition or developmental delay that needs to be addressed.
Fine motor skills are one of the skill areas that you should track. Familiarize yourself with the movements your child should be able to perform at certain ages–for example, a six-month-old should be able to move a toy from one hand to the other.
If your child misses a milestone, bring them into Wee Speak Therapy & Learning Center for an assessment. We’ll get to the bottom of things and, if necessary, provide strategies for improving their fine motor skills.
How Pediatric Therapy Helps Improve Fine Motor Development
One of the most significant roles of a pediatric therapist is helping kids meet developmental milestones, no matter the underlying cause. Our pediatric occupational therapists, in particular, have specialized training in helping kids better use their hands and fingers.
We always start with a comprehensive assessment. It’s important for us to know if there’s an underlying condition, such as Down syndrome, autism, or cerebral palsy, that might be impacting your child’s fine motor skills, as that can affect the interventions we choose. Sometimes, though, a child will simply have a developmental delay. Fortunately, we can help there, as well.
We tailor every child’s treatment plan to their needs, age, and interests. Children learn through play, so we design our plans to mimic playtime as much as possible. We don’t want treatment to feel like a medical treatment. We want it to be fun!
Some of the activities we might use to promote fine motor skill development in children include the following:
- Working with Playdoh
- Creating works of art with finger paints
- Playing with finger puppets
